From the end of the 19th century, bathing in the sea became an important part of the spa business on BorkumAt that time, however, it was customary to strictly separate men and women on the beach. Below Wilhelmshöhe, women, men, and children could swim together—a progressive option for the time. The bathing areas were once strictly regulated by signs and bathing regulations. Bathing carts, mobile changing rooms on wheels that allowed guests to enter the water discreetly, were particularly popular. Over time and with social change, this strict segregation became less important, and the beaches were increasingly open to all bathers. Today, it is normal for women, men, and children to swim together.
