How to Arrive

Whether by ship, train or plane – many routes lead to Borkum.

Find out here how you can travel comfortably to the ferry ports of Emden and Eemshaven and from there to Borkum can translate.

You can reach the Emden outer harbor via the A31, and the jetty in Eemshaven in the Netherlands via the N33 or B46. Guests who do not want to take their car to the island will find sufficient paid parking spaces in both harbors, each in the immediate vicinity of the jetties.

The journey to Borkum Traveling by train is more relaxing, more environmentally friendly, and often cheaper than driving: some trains go directly to Emden Outer Harbor or Eemshaven and stop right in front of the ferry or catamaran docks. In Germany, your DB ticket is valid for the entire journey on many routes, including the boat passage.

From many parts of Germany, the railway offers direct intercity connections to East Frisia: IC trains run every two hours from Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen and Münster (Westf.) to Emden Central Station with connections to Emden's outer harbour.

Intercity trains run every two hours from Leipzig, Magdeburg, Hanover and Bremen to Emden Central Station without changing trains, and one train continues to Emden Außenhafen. From many other cities you can reach Emden Central Station with just one change, for example from Berlin and Frankfurt in less than 5 hours.

Local transport tickets are also accepted on the IC trains between Bremen and Emden or Norddeich Mole, including the low-cost Lower Saxony tariff. This means that local transport customers between Bremen and Emden can use the RE trains to enjoy new hourly direct connections.

Local transport also serves the Emden outer harbour with regional express trains from Münster (Westf.) via Rheine or from Hanover via Bremen to Emden main station with connections to the outer harbour.

Travelling by train via Groningen to Eemshaven

Since April 2018, Eemshaven has been connected to the Dutch passenger rail network. It is now also possible to travel by train via Groningen to the ferry terminal in Eemshaven and take the ferry to the island from there.

Train traffic is provided by Arriva NL, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, which operates local passenger transport to and from Groningen in the northern Netherlands.

Tip: Simply send your luggage from home directly to your holiday accommodation using the DB luggage service. Reserve your very own seat on the IC - enjoy travel comfort right from the start.

With Ostfriesischer-Flug-Dienst GmbH (OFD) you can fly from the airport in Emden, which is located directly on the A 31, in a quarter of an hour to BorkumUp to five flights are offered daily.

The airfield Borkum, where the flight school Borkum is located between the city and the eastern region. A regular bus service runs between the airport and the town center, and a taxi company also operates on request. Tel. 04922 1001. Bicycles can also be rented directly at the airport.

With its white fleet, AG EMS sails from Emden (ferry approx. 2 hours, catamaran 60 minutes) and from Eemshaven in the Netherlands (50 minutes). We recommend making a reservation if you are travelling by catamaran or transporting your car on the ferry.

With the island railway from the port to the town

The route from the pier BorkumThe island railway and the town center can be traveled year-round by island train or bus. On selected dates, rides on the historic steam locomotive also take place. The island railway is included in your ferry ticket.

Important! The printed departure times for catamaran and ferry include the journey with the Borkumthe narrow-gauge railway and are therefore valid from Borkum Train station. For example, if you take the catamaran to Emden at 5:40 PM, you will depart from the train station in the city at 5:40 PM on the island train.
