The Great Cape

The 23,4 meter high structure was built in 1872 and once marked the further route along the island Borkum

De Grote Kaap

The ships coming from the sea were thus able to use deck bearings to find the approach buoy for the Osterems Alter Leuchtturm Like the Kleine Kaap, the Große Kaap was built from red clinker brick. This makes it one of the few buildings of its kind to be made from this material - the top sign on the other hand is made of wood. The advantage of the clinker material: Due to the solid construction, the buildings do not need to be constantly renovated, like their wooden "siblings". These have to be replaced after about 30 years due to weather conditions. If you want to visit the Große Kaap, you can go to the Knappschaftsklinik into Boeddinghausstraße. There the impressive sea mark towers into the sky.

The Kleine Kaap

Like its big brother, the Kleine Kaap once served as a sea mark.

Little Cape - Borkum

With deck bearing Alter Leuchtturm It was intended to show sailors the way to the Westeremstonne. At 11,7 meters high, it is considerably smaller than the Grosse Kaap, located 650 meters away. Anyone who wants to see the smaller version can walk past the Hotel Hohenzollern on the upper promenade and see it from afar. Unfortunately, there is no direct path to the Kaap, but an information board on the connecting path "Hotel Das Miramar" and the parking lot at Engel'se Pad provides all the important information. Incidentally, both Kaaps were paid for with reparations paid by France to Germany after the Franco-Prussian War.

The Oostbake

A full nine kilometres from the city centre, deep in the Ostland, the Oostbake rises from a seven-metre-high dune.

Oostbake - Borkum

With a structure height of approximately 7,30 meters and a six-meter-high "pole," it still serves as a guide for small ships today. The impressive thing about the Oostbake is not necessarily the structure itself, but the surroundings. Dunes, small forests, a diverse flora and fauna, simply untouched nature for miles around. In every direction, the beach and the sea can be seen; at dusk, the light of the New Leuchtturms towards you, and from somewhere you can always hear birds or fallow deer. So orientation isn't just for sailors. If you need to take a deep breath, it's there.
