The 4 most beautiful cycling routes

Borkum experience on the bike

from Dennis Möller | May 09, 2019

Along the many cycle routes to and from Borkum, the breathtaking nature can be best enjoyed. On the island, they lead through untouched nature, magnificent dune landscapes, small forests, past freshwater lakes and inland pastures, and on the mainland, past charming little towns and beautiful cities. The 4 best cycling routes with BorkumI would like to introduce this reference here.

1. The "Day Tour"

Cycling routes Borkum

Wonderful view of the Borkumnature

In our Tourist Information we always recommend the "day tour" to our guests. I recently had the pleasure of conducting an interview with the cycling blog "Diamantrad" in which I also recommended this cycle route. At around 19 kilometers, it is still very easy to ride. You start in the city center, cycle along the promenade by the sea, through the natural "Greune Stee" to the sea dike and there you can enjoy the view of the mudflats and the meadows of the Ostland. The area around the Tüskendörsee is a breeding and resting area for water birds and ground-nesting birds. When you arrive at the Sternklippdünen, you get a wonderful panoramic view of the entire landscape, which, if the visibility is good, even extends to the neighboring islands. Then you continue into the Ostland, through the Westland, past the Emmich memorial and the airfield. Then you cycle back to the city via the Upholmdünen.

The entire interview is available .

2. Past dunes, meadows and mudflats

Short break

The tour starts on Old people Leuchtturm and leads past the island museum and the island school, over Upholmstrasse to Barbaraweg. From here, continue to the Ostfriesenstrasse junction and then on the well-developed cycle path out into Ostland. Before the airfield, turn right, then past the meadows on the Bantjedünen dike, straight on towards the sea dike. At the end of the sea dike is the "Sternklippdünen" viewing point. There is a wonderful view of the mudflats, Osterems and the neighboring islands. You can then return the same way or explore the landscape a little more.

3. The Ems Cycle Path

This really beautiful cycle route is not ON Borkum, but it leads AFTER Borkum. The Ems cycle path The route follows the entire course of the Ems River, from its source to its mouth in the North Sea, for over 385 kilometers. If you would like to travel the entire route, the route starts in beautiful East Westphalia, in Hövelhof in the Senne region. It then passes beautiful towns such as Delbrück, Telgte, Greven, Rheine, Papenburg, and Ditzum, before finally reaching the destination in Emden. From there, you can easily take the AG-EMS to Borkum where you can explore another 130 kilometers of cycling and hiking trails.

4. The Dollard Route

I have to be honest here, I have not driven the route myself. However, after some discussions with friends and colleagues, I was strongly advised to Dollard Route Located directly in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, the tour takes you past windmills and small villages, always in close proximity to the North Sea. In addition to the fresh air on the bike, the ferry connections across the Dollard are a real highlight. From May to September, the passenger ship “Dollard” connects the ports of Ditzum, Emden and DelfzijlThe website of the International Dollard Route describes the further course of the cycle route as follows: "On the Dollard Route, you cycle through the expanse of the polder landscape, which was reclaimed from the sea through centuries of work, and repeatedly pass through small, sleepy villages. The final destination of the tour is the North Sea island Borkum Of course, where else?

The first tour is my favorite route. I like to leave my bike at the Sternklippdüne and walk the circular route to Hooge Hörn. Simply wonderful.
