Holiday with the dog on Borkum

The offshore climate is not only good for us humans

from Jeelka de Buhr | December 02, 2020

"Do you say, O man, that the dog is my dearest is a sin? The dog remained faithful to me in the storm, but man not even in the wind." (Francis of Assisi) Borkum is a true paradise for people and their four-legged friends. It boasts endless beaches, dune areas, an island forest, and beautiful accommodations where you and your furry friends are warmly welcomed.

But let’s start with the journey. Borkum If you want to travel by ferry, you'll have to take the ferry from Emden or Eemshaven. Dogs are allowed on the ferry and the catamaran. It's important that you reserve a ticket for yourself and your dog with the ferry company in advance. https://www.ag-ems.de/

Once you arrive on the island, the island train is waiting at the ferry port. The trip to the town is included in the ferry ticket. Dogs are allowed in all carriages

There are many accommodations on our island that accommodate dogs and of course their owners. I would recommend you to here You can select “pets welcome” in your search. This will only show you accommodations where dogs are allowed.

Tip: Contact the Tourist Information team Borkum (04922-933-0 or info@borkum.de). The staff are very knowledgeable about the island and can provide you with suitable offers. Our tourist information service is free of charge.

On Borkum During the breeding and nesting season (April 01st to July 15th), dogs must be kept on a leash. Outside of this period, our furry friends are allowed to run free in the area of the "black dike" and from the nudist beach entrance to the right towards Hooge Hörn (end of the island) and really let off steam. We have a flyer "Here everyone feels at home" with all the important information about vacationing with your pet on Borkum- created. This is online as well as in the Tourist information Borkum .

Freedom at Borkumthe beach

If you like to sunbathe on the beach in summer, you can also take your dog to the DLRG-guarded beaches. Nordbad, at Südbad There are also areas on the nudist beach where dogs are welcome. These areas are clearly marked with "dog beach" signs. (Please remember to bring sunscreen and plenty of water and food for your pet.)

You don’t want to hope for it, but if your pet is not feeling well or even injured while on holiday, you can trust

the veterinary practices of

Dr. med. vet. Petra Koblischke (Olde Melkstee 21 – 0170 -3478376) or on

Dr. med. vet. Fritzsche (Under de Diek 1b – 0173-2657415) .

Both practices are highly recommended and do an excellent job in the interests of the animals.

Tip for a wonderful walk:

You start on Nordbad At the level of the Hotel Hohenzollern and walk along the upper promenade towards the east (end of the island). On the upper promenade, you first pass Café Sturmeck. Then you walk along a beautiful wooden plank path, which is lined with Borkumern called "Loopdeelenweg" until the promenade ends at Café Seeblick. Once there, it goes down to the beach. I always like to walk along the edge of the dunes until I reach the nudist beach entrance (Milchbude "Dünenbudje"/ Sauna + Restaurant "Up Stee"). Leaving this behind, you can "free" your furry friends from their leashes and chase them around the beach. After the nudist area, I always like to go to the sea and then walk along the water's edge toward Ostland Beach.

Polly dares to enter the Priel

(Please pay attention to the Tides. The tides can be tricky! The rule of thumb is not to walk between a tidal channel and the water's edge when the tide is rising, as the tide is coming in and the beach area between the tidal channel and the sea gradually closes. You can get a map of the island and the tide calendar from the tourist information office.)

I usually walk with our dog along the water’s edge until I spot the “Kobbedünen” entrance on the right-hand side (marked on the island map).

"Kobbedünen" entrance

From the Dune Trail onwards, dogs must be kept on a leash. When you have walked to the end of the hiking trail, you will see the Café Ostland or the Bauernstuben on your right. Dogs are welcome guests there, just like their owners, and they also get something to replenish their energy.

If the weather is not good or you have already walked far enough, you can take your dog to the bus (stop "Ostland") back to town. You can get the tickets directly from the driver.

Otherwise, continue walking towards the center of the island. The official hiking trails are marked on the island map and can be selected according to your preference and fitness level.

I hope that I have given you some information and tips on the subject of “Dog holidays on Borkum"I was able to share with you. Have fun planning your next trip.

I want to book a holiday apartment nearby with my dog soon. It's good to know that dogs don't always have to be on a leash. This is of course pure luxury for the dog.

What is it like at the beginning of June? We like to go for walks on the beach along the water's edge. Let's say 1-3 kilometers. Is that possible at the time mentioned above? For example, towards the end of the island

    1. Jeelka de Buhr says:

Hello. Walks along the water's edge are always possible. During the breeding season (June) dogs must be on a leash. LG

Thank you for this information and for the wording. It's great that you write that dogs are "welcome" here and there and not "tolerated".
Are there also restaurants on Borkumwhere you can bring a dog? Are they still open in November?
    Thank you!
