Sustainable goals - Experience the energy transition – Borkum on the way to climate neutrality

Borkum is lapped by the waves of the North Sea. Many vacationers appreciate the islanders' hospitality, the climate, and the expansive beaches. For many, this offshore island has been a place of longing since childhood. Borkum But today it stands for much more. In addition to all its traditions, the island community has embarked on a sustainable future. The goal is to be climate-neutral by 2030, thus preserving the foundations of the "East Frisian Island" natural experience.

Already today, one can marvel at a significant part of the energy transition here. About 15 km northwest of Borkum On a clear day, the wind turbines of the "Riffgat" offshore wind farm can be seen on the horizon. All German offshore wind farms in the North Sea have a combined capacity of over 6.400 MW (as of 2019) and produce climate-friendly green electricity on no fewer than 353 days a year. The "Riffgat" project alone, for example, supplies electricity for 120.000 households.
If you take a closer look around the island, you will notice that Borkum is committed to minimizing emissions over the next 10 years. This commitment includes two 1.8 MW wind turbines at the port and a ground-mounted photovoltaic system. Borkum In the future, however, the area will be even more influenced by offshore wind energy generation – and this on land, as can be seen on the site of the former naval port in the Reede district. Here, a modern residential area for the service staff of the Borkum located wind farms, along with a jetty where the so-called CTVs, the transport ships for the employees, are moored.

The island is not only a wonderful place for a holiday, but also for commuting to work. You can certainly watch one of the service ships leaving port, out into the North Sea, where the wind turbines are constantly turning in the wind on the horizon.
