Der Elektrische Leuchtturm

The perfect holiday motif

electric Leuchtturm
Der Elektrische Leuchtturm

Round, red and white striped, and located in the middle of the dunes. Its builders in 1890 were less concerned with creating the perfect holiday motif, but rather with making nighttime navigation in the area of the Ems estuary even safer. It hasn't been in operation for several years. As for the electric Leuchtturm cannot stop its paintwork from continuing to radiate an almost clichéd North Sea romance.

The 27-meter-high electric Leuchtturm is located on the edge dune south of the town centre of Borkum and is easily accessible from there with a 15-minute walk. On August 11, 2003, the Emden Waterways and Shipping Authority extinguished the beacon because a sandbank currently runs through the fairway. The tower continues to serve as a radar antenna carrier for the German-Dutch traffic safety system in the Ems estuary.
