Maypoles have been erected in many places for hundreds of years. They symbolize the arrival of warmth, fertility and prosperity; the triumph of spring over winter. But the tradition is celebrated differently from place to place.
On Borkum is it the one Association of Borkumthe boys, who organizes the erection of the maypole. For many years he has been trying to maintain the ancient island traditions. The boys put up the tree in the center of the town, on Süderstraße, where it can be seen from afar and heralds the approaching summer.
The ceremony will be accompanied by performances by the Borkumthe traditional costume group and the men's choir of the BorkumThe boys perform Frisian dances and sea shanties.
By the way, traditionally the “Börkumer Maiboom” has the shape of a ship’s mast.
