This year, the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park is presenting 10. to 18.10.2026 for the 18th time an interesting and exciting program.
These will be trilateral migratory bird days, with the partner countries Denmark and the Netherlands. Lectures and excursions will provide surprising insights into the unique habitat and behavior of the more than two million birds that rest in the national park's territory. Also on Borkum There will be lectures, exhibitions, and excursions by bike and on foot. Ambitious birdwatchers are highly recommended to participate in the Aviathlon, in which the islands and mainland regions compete to discover the most bird species during the week of Migratory Bird Days.
Anyone who has visited a place on the German North Sea coast in spring or autumn will have noticed the large flocks of birds. There is hardly an area with a greater abundance of birds than the Wadden Sea, because migratory birds characterize the image of the national park. The typical migratory birds of the Wadden Sea usually breed in the Arctic, in northern Europe, Asia or in America. On the way to their winter quarters, which are mostly in West Africa, many of these species stop off in the Wadden Sea for a single rest. Many birds use their rest in the Wadden Sea to replenish their energy reserves. The Wadden Sea offers ideal conditions for this. The abundance of food here is so great that millions of migratory birds can meet their high energy requirements. Without a stopover in the Wadden Sea, many birds are unable to complete their migration route and breed successfully. This fact alone makes clear the literally global significance of the Wadden Sea and underlines how justified its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List is.
