Join Steffen, our local nature-loving fox with eagle eyes, on an extraordinary bike tour. Experience the diverse natural areas Borkums and benefit from his in-depth knowledge of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

When planning the appropriate cycling tour, our employee Steffen Wagener pursued a clear goal: to show you the beauty and diversity of the diverse natural areas in the western part of the island Borkums that go far beyond the well-known beaches in a single tour.

Now Steffen himself gives an insight into his bike tour around the centre of the island (approx. 18 km – duration approx. 3 hours):

"Our starting and finishing point is the arthotel bakker. From there, our route leads first along the promenade and then over the tar dike to the Ronden Plate. The first part of the tour is characterized by alternating fortifications and groynes, which represent the necessary coastal protection in the west of the island, which is particularly exposed to the tides and currents.

When we reach the Roden Plate, at the transition to the Greune Stee, where the cultural landscape turns into a natural landscape, we pass through a primeval forest area. Although it looks like a primeval forest, it is not one in the sense of the national park. These and other exciting details for understanding the nature conservation measures are important topics on our tour.

When you reach the dike gap, the landscape changes completely again.

The path takes us over the top of the New Dike towards the east. Looking to the left, you can see the interior of the island with the special Tüskendör pastures, to the right the salt marshes extend far into the mudflats. Each of these natural areas has its own history and significance for the local flora and fauna, which we will examine in more detail along the way. When we reach the lock of Lake Tüskendör, the binoculars we brought with us will come in handy.

The Tüskendörsee and the adjacent mudflats are a fascinating 'hotspot' for ornithologists. The variety of birds that can be seen here regularly creates an 'aha' effect. We take our time at this special point for individual panoramic views!

We continue through the outer pastures, which, thanks to the EU Life project for meadow breeders, attract important bird species, such as the black-tailed godwit, which we are very likely to see.

Upon reaching the Ostland and the observation dune offers a comprehensive panoramic view that gives a feeling for the size of the island and its location in the mouth of the Ems.

The further path through the mussel field and the Waterdelle is also a "path through the island's history" ... the junction where the two parts of the island once grew together. If you look closely, the traces of this development are still clearly reflected in the natural landscape today. It is no coincidence that this area is called "Waterdelle", because nowhere else on the island does the groundwater level reach the surface as clearly as here, and the exciting topic of drinking water production on the East Frisian Islands is almost inevitable.

The way home from the core zone of the national park back to the city offers rich insights into the past, present and nature of the island Borkumbefore we return to the starting point at the arthotel bakker."

• Your own binoculars or spotting scope, if you have them.
• A limited number of binoculars (maximum 4) can be borrowed from the arthotel.

• Sufficient drinks for the journey
