We on Borkum enjoy the privilege of a water supply that is independent of the mainland. Every year, around 1.4 million cubic meters of rainwater are collected in our drinking water area. Of this volume, the Lower Water Authority of the Leer district authorizes us to withdraw 1.2 million cubic metres per year – a quota that we manage with the utmost responsibility. In fact, we currently only use around 850,000 cubic meters, which puts us in a comfortable position compared to other regions in Germany in terms of water availability. Our commitment to the careful use of this precious resource is reflected in every aspect of our work. From the active wells, which draw water from depths of between 10 and 40 meters, to the regular maintenance of the pumps and the constant search for new, productive sources – all these actions guarantee the high quality of our drinking water. Stadtwerke Borkum is at the center of these efforts. At the main waterworks in Hindenburgstraße, the water is treated using advanced processes such as cascade aeration and gravel filtration, without the use of any chemical additives. A second waterworks is located in the Ostland drinking water area, where the water is treated from four deep wells and seven shallow wells. As the water from the deep wells is brown in color, flocculants are used here for purification. Our drinking water, which has become known locally as “healing water”, is characterized by its purity and optimum degree of hardness. However, the quality of our water is not just a question of technology, but also of awareness. In a world where clean water is not a given everywhere, we are faced with the challenge of critically questioning our water consumption. Why do we reach for water in plastic bottles when what comes out of our taps is of the highest quality? Each of us can help to reduce water consumption and waste by making conscious decisions in our everyday lives.
